Constance hands-on preview

Constance brings magic and paint to the Metroidvania genre.

Taylor talks about the upcoming game and how it felt just right during his play session at PAX East 2025.

In Constance, everything revolves around a paint meter. Our weapon is a paintbrush, and we paint with purple paint. Enemies sometimes have black corruption on them, and in which case we have to use paint attacks to stop them. If we run out of paint, then we ourselves start to get corrupted, and we lose HP if we attack in that state. Our dodge uses up some of that meter as well. All of that is pretty self explanatory, but it works together really well, especially with the bautiful hand-drawn art style. In a game like this movement is crucial and in Constance it’s really responsive, and so platforming feels tight.

The demo was what seemed like the little bit of intro, a little bit of navigation, and then the first boss. There was one little area where once we get our first powered up attack, we can reach and attack things where we couldn’t normally reach. So there’s a clear barrier, but there’s something on the other side, and now all of a sudden we have an attack that can pierce through and hit there. In this same area we have to hit lights to open up a door, but the three lights go off intermittently and we have to hit them in a specific time because they took different amounts of time to go to the door.

And I thought, “dude, if I stay here and keep trying to figure this out, I will be here for a long time.” So I had to give it up. So I think this might be something a little hidden in the demo, but it was worth stumbling across.

Constance seems like the kind of game where I’ll know in 30 seconds whether or not it’s going to feel good to play, that type of feeling where everything responds in the way that you expect it to, and the feedback from the game is always there.

It’s currently scheduled for release later this year.

SideQuesting had a chance to play the game at PAX East. This video first appeared on The SideQuest LIVE for May 9, 2025.
