The first trailer for Superman is here to light up our nostalgia

Everyone loves (to hate?) Superman in the first trailer for the epic new comic book movie

We’ve been real curious as to how Superman would look and feel after James Gunn took over the reins of the DC movie universe and rebooted the ultimate hero, and now it seems as though we might be getting a little more nostalgic.

In the film, Superman is dealing with the aftereffects of his involvement in stopping a war, which the US government doesn’t appreciate with his international meddling. The ramifications now paint him as sort of an outcast after having been the heroic figure for so long. Couple that with a ton of a other heroes and villains from across the DC universe and it’s a huge Superfest.

But it’s the 1970s feel of the film that is piquing our interest, not just the plot. The trailer leans heavily into the music of the original Christopher Reeve Superman movie series, and focuses on the bright colors and general “American-ness” that made those films so memorable. It looks cleaner, poppier, and generally like the comics that it’s based on.

Hopefully Clark Kent and Co. don’t turn their adventures into a gritty take again. I think we’re kind of through with that for a while.

Superman fliiiiiies into theaters in July.
